About the Aeolian (Natural Minor) Scale
The Aeolian mode, identical to the natural minor scale, has a sad, melancholic, and serious character. It's the relative minor of the major scale, sharing the same notes but starting from a different root, creating a distinctly darker mood.
Usage
Fundamental to rock, metal, pop ballads, and classical music. The default minor scale for most Western music. Used for sad songs, dramatic pieces, and emotional expression. Extremely versatile across all genres.
History
The Aeolian mode became the natural minor scale as the church modes evolved into the major-minor system. It's been central to Western music for centuries, expressing emotions from melancholy to introspection in countless compositions.
